A Cowboy's Church
A Cowboy's Church by Alice Shimmin Kessel (daughter of Thomas Shimmin, Dickey Co., ND)
“I did not go to church today, and worship with the rest;
I watched the cattle grazing near, my shanty in the West.
The bumble bees drank holy wine, from flowers on the plain;
The ants received their bread of life before the coming rain.
As I prayed for peace on earth, I watched a cloud sail by;
Birds overhead sang joyously, they were my choir on high.
I did not go to church today and worship with a few;
But I could feel your presence, God - there in my hillside pew.”
